at last i cleared the expert level of minesweeper. first time in countless tries!!! ecstatic

ever seen a '6'? it was a 50-50 chance of hitting it.

this blog has become really 'third-person' since coming over from blogdrive to blogspot. it has alwyas been a bug in me to try and blog as i used to, more storytelling, less pictures, and more personal.

well, i was reading a journal, and found this line in the last para

The fact that mutations opposite those seen in the D2S10 population occurred when passaging in either BHK cell culture or mouse brains confirms the validity of passaging virus between mosquito cells and mice to generate viruses that behave more similarly to those that cause disease in humans.

Shresta et al, JVI 2008, in press

and this is exactly what my Msc project is all about!

on one hand, i'm saddened that someone 'scooped' me to the publishers and that my project has no publication value now. the journals would not publish the same work twice, even if its in another journal.

on the other hand, i'm happy. i conceived this idea three years ago, penned it down, got a 75k grant to fund the project, worked on the project, and am writing up the findings of it now. people around me didnt know what the heck i was trying to do and if my project was feasible in the first place but i soldiered on. thatpaper had 5 names on it but i only had myself to do everything. there wasnt anyone to sound my ideas off or to tell me if my results meant anything.

i really feel happy today. happy that the thoughts He gave me 3 years ago were higher than my own. happy that the strength He gave me lasted me throughout these trying times. happy because He was my source of inspiration, and now my goal to finish everything up. happy because i know in Him, if He did it for me before, He will do it for me again in the future.

was worried that when i go over to my new PhD place that i would be left out in the dark shadows between the pillars of amazing researchers hovering over the place. thank you God for reassuring me.

was doing kids emerge in church and they had different team colours represented by the bangers. quite fun. at the end of it, the kids were jumping on the bangers to make them pop.

nice lyrics, great vocal

Prayer of a common man:
Phil Vassar

Daddy put in his forty years, got his gold watch, and then they sent him home.
I never knew what a struggle was like until I cried tears on his stone.
He was just a kinder-will lived and died on the layaway plan.
But Lord hear the prayer of a Common Man.

Alleluia. Is anybody out there?
Alleluia Does anybody care?
Life takes its toll on the heart and soul, but I’m doing the best I can.
Lord hear the prayer of a Common Man.

A little girl needed braces but it cost a couple thousand bucks.
She has a beautiful smile but it’ll be awhile on my new/used pickup truck.
This house of cards I built is mortgaged to the hills and its sinking in the sand.
Lord hear the prayer of a Common Man.

Alleluia. Is anybody out there?
Alleluia Does anybody care?
Life takes its toll on the heart and soul, but I’m doing the best I can.
Lord hear the prayer of a Common Man.

I’m not looking for charity, I just need some clarity.
I’ve got people counting on me. And I’m tired that’s all
I’m up against the wall. Lord hear me when I call.

Alleluia. I know your up there.
Alleluia. I know you care.
Life takes its toll on the heart and soul, but I’m doing the best I can.
Oh Lord hear the prayer of a Common Man.
Lord hear the prayer of this Common Man.

the uni now has this deal with teh national heritage board to allow its students in for free into some museums. so i decided to go to the asian civ museum last week.

before that, took a hearty meal of curry chicken with sugar cane juice.

the building is an old colonial building that was some government office block for some high ranking officials. they refurbished it to put in the exhibits, and some of the architecture was pretty impressive. although i must say i didnt like the space that they wasted. seemed that there was too much empty space.

the entrance

some metl drum

oops

some candle or knick knack holder

the south east asian part

wonder how many burtal murders were accomplished with this thing.

retro shoes

groovy caps

ancient malay canon

the shirts were really huge, i wonder how they ever got around in them
maybe ancient peopel were giants.

there were lots of these little corners that had videos that tell a story of how certain art forms were done, or why certain celebrations were held. overall quite interesting and infomative.

some islamic sripts that were made of tiny scripts in themselves. found it very creative.

clay houses for deco.

all the exhibits had these little ligths that brightened up the subjects. found them very cute and sensible. they really look like miniature theatre lights.

teh special exhibit. they actually stole some stuf from the regular exhibit to put them in here.

mother or pearl jewel box.

another section of the museum. these are keris, an olden day malay weapon

belt buckles. long ago people must had had huge pants to need such a size buckle

brooches.

the weapons exhibit

the singapore river

supreme court. the railings by the side are for lights for the formula 1 race in town in september. they are going to have a night race and for safety reasons, have to make the whole track 'as bright as day'. then why not have it in the daytime instead in the first place??
supposedly having it at night in asia means that people in america and europe can watch it at a more earthly hour for them.

after that went for dinner at a chicken rice shop but didnt order chicken rice. this is pork chop, supposedly famous, but i think it sucks.

the tofu was good. very soft inside.

fried minced meat roll. dont know its proper name in english. not bad.

all in an afternoon's worth.

Once upon a time, a man in a hot air balloon realized that he was lost.
He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more
and shouted. "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would
meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The woman below replied. "You're in a hot air balloon hovering
approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 50 and 51 degrees
north latitude and between 114 and 115 degrees west longitude."

"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.

"I am," replied the woman. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically
correct, but I've no idea what to make use of your information. The fact
is, I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If
anything, you've delayed my trip."

The woman below responded, "You must be in management."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you're
going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot
air. You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep, and you
expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is, you are
in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now,
somehow, you've managed to make it my fault!!"

this is the highest i ever recorded for my quad core so far, 97% on all cores. and thats after running 4 scan softwares at the same time: ad-aware, scan spyware, spyware doctor, and spybot. maybe if i do a defrag at the same time it will go to 100. hmmmm......

pc show 2008 was on so i headed down for an external hard disk. there were three choices, all almost the same price: seagate, western digital, and maxtor.

of course lah seagate

free agent 3.5" external hard disk 500Gb 7200rpm. SGD149

like the exchangable power plug, they gave a US, asia 3 pin, and EU adaptor. i'm using the EU 2 pin one.

there's this cool orange led light when the power is on.
its very quiet, more quiet i think than my current hdd in my desktop which sometimes makes weird noises.

transfered my postgrad work over, which was abotu 1gb, then my mp3's which is about 44 gb. and now trying to make a mirror image of my hard disk on it, which would be 100 gb.
hmmm...
maybe shoudl have got the 1Tb one...

but this will do for now, till i fill it up with more rubbish.

some company promo by Roche. try their product, comment, then get free torch. too bad its the regular one, not the LED or waterproof one. but of course free things dont complain.
