Was in Göteborg for 4 days for a conference for graduate students. So they put us all in single rooms which was great, but the conference place was in the middle of nowhere, which was bad.

the place was spacious and had lots of comfy chairs lying around.

very unstable hammock

there was free flow of tea, coffee, fruits and bisuits on these tables. I can only imagine how much they paid for us per person.

the conference room. To be honest, some of the talks were really dry, but then again, its an infection biology retreat, and I'm supposed to be in immunology.

Two labmates putting up their poster.

dinner place

raw veal with quail egg

rolled fish with couscous.

things about my lab:

cupboards well stocked

no need to make your own sterile water and PBS

Huge tables and plenty of Macs (i like the table part, but not so much the mac part)

Door code to each lab, which sometimes gets confusing because you need to remember so many codes.

Coffee machine, free flow of caffeine!

Free flow of consumables and media.
no need to fill tips!

huge autoclave machine, and autoclaving service, just leave your stuff in the tray and it will come back tomorrow autoclaved and dried. nice.

whatever media you need!

anyone noticed the new weird media bottles?

Shared labcoats, no hogging for coats, just choose the size that fits and

Cool hood!

100 sek for one movie ticket!!! ack.
first world country, first world price!
but the seats are larger than the ones in singapore, and the temp is not so cold.
the sound is pretty decent but the halls are tiny, maybe 100 people in a room. so the screen is abit small, but still a good experience.
Go again?
nah, watch on my 22" with a pair of good headphones is good enough.

watched this one because one indian guy in the lab said it was good, and anyway, supposedly it got nomainated for quite a number of awards.

for those of you who think i am dead and thus the absence of posts here, i'm sorry to disappoint you.

this is what i was at for the past two weeks, alot of work in the lab, tons of blood samples to process, got to entertain a pretty lady who came to visit, and DEADlines.

one mac to run the special scientific software, the desktop for number crunching (the lousy mac is only 12", already getting blind trying tosquint at it.), and the other laptop for facebook and msn.

now, thats what i call multitasking!

one day conference for all the students taking the infection biology phd program at karolinska. every student presented 10 minutes on what they were doing. so was pretty good coz get to know everybody else in the program and what everybody was up to. there were a few interesting talks, one about anti HIV antibodies found in homosexual couples with only one of the perosns having HIV infection, that had oral sex, another was about using weird drugs to treat sleeping illnesses.

loved the floor carpet of the restaurant . made to look dirty, old and like those you see on the roadside, next to the traffic lights to direct blind persons.

old building, made in the 1890's and was an old school refurbished into meeting rooms. the place is called norra latin,

very nice place

went to freiburg, germay for two days in the middle of this week for some meeting with other researchers in europe doing the same work as my lab. it was basically travel in in a hurry, meeting, meeting, meeting, then travel out in a hurry.

at germany, while waiting for the train at frankfurt, we had, no-not frankfurters, but bread. and yes, german bread better than swedish.

the ICE train, which is very fast, like 250km/h fast, and the locals call it the 'ichy' train, just to pull fun at it. the tickets were expensive, 2 way 2 hour trip costs €120.

freiburg at last. little cobble sidewalks. like upsala, its a university town.

spiderclaus in action

the center square

very nice drain covers

pizza like thing i had for lunch, supposedly the local specialty. what so special? nothing.

video i took of us walking through the christmas market on the way to the hospital for the meeting. the markets here are far better than any in sweden i have seen so far. alot more fun stuff to see.

after 7 hours of meetings, we went for dinner. climbed up a hill to this restaurant. quite nice but no german food, sigh. ate pasta with chicken and mushrooms.

the standard european christmas tree. simple.

the hotel we stayed at. this is the lobby. at night it becomes a bar.

reception

my room

on the way back the next day at 2, which was after 3 hours of more meetings, i realized the 'itchy' train had free music. alas, all in german, so listened to clasical music.

quite comfortable and very quiet. oh yea, thats my boss' shoulder.

the only sightseeing i got, window shopping?

went to some deserted place in some island in stockholm for my department's annual christmas dinner. this year round, its an indoor boules building. normally this is played outdoors in summer.

traditional christmas buffet in sweden, which actually contains the same food that you would find in a traditional swedish easter buffet, which coincidentally is also the same stuff you find on midsummer nights buffet.

herring in chilli, mustart or just preserved like that.
prawns
salmon roe on eggs
salmon with lemon
smoked salmon with dill
salmon 'paste' like thing with some veg
potatoes boilled
potato sliced in cream
beetroot
salted baked meat

the game was more interesting. dont want to go through the instructions but you basically throw these metal balls and you try to get as many as your teams balls as close to the tiny red 'cork' ball as possible.

to differentiate between balls from both teams, one team has stripped balls, the other has smooth balls

not cheap

i wonder if the greenish thing is the northern lights but covered by clouds
